Reminds me of how the Old Town off Broadway used to be, before it got “discovered” and “renovated.” Beautiful, cheap and friendly, full of local residents before the Union Square tear-down. This would have been in the early 80s. I loved it. Chumley’s, too. Smoke-stained walls and an open fire burning in the hearth on winter nights. Mulled hard cider in huge tea urns. Can you tell, it’s been a while since I lived in New York?

Yes! it definitely has that connotation of old schoolness. It feels the same in London pubs that haven't been ruthlessly renovated.
