This is the result of the Howard Stern era of radio talk show interviews. Those studios with the big microphones DID exist, in the stylized form that you describe, for wholly practical purposes. Then the video cameras were brought into those spaces, which felt cozy and welcoming, by shear fact of the size of those spaces for acoustic and financial purposes.
Meanwhile, outside the studio, sound techs were busy running microphone cables up uncomfortable interviewees shirts, fumbling around inside the personal space of hosts and their guests.
It was an inevitable transition from that, to what we have today. Add to that the leather cigar lounge chair critic, podcaster tech peacockery, HGTV, and viola.
That's an amazingly awkward gallery of photos. I still read, so don't do podcasts (though I do listen to audiobooks when multi-tasking) but I remember when I used to drive to work and I'd listen to a particular sports talk radio show (sort of comfort food) and they said they had a youtube channel and I thought, oh, that cannot be a good thing. I was correct. As they used to say, "You have a great face for radio". Thanks, though, for planting those images in my mind. I cannot unsee them. I think the worst may be the folks on the sofa, which somehow projects their crotches up, and then the host, I assume, in the random kitchenette chair. Wow.
I really appreciate the format of this post. I used to see it a lot on tumblr, where it was typically used to highlight patterns and tropes among films. (Do you think this format will make its way into professional journalism, the way the video podcast has? Hahaha.) It's very powerful to see these images side by side. Thanks for helping me articulate why I feel so exhausted by podcasts in general now and why I haven't been willing to listen to one in weeks. (I have no idea "what they say". I swear, podcasts used to feel more intentional and interesting.)
